The process...

The curriculum offered in the intermediate phase is focused on developing the holistic needs of the child. This gives learners an opportunity to identify their strengths and to build on these. Learners are also encouraged, in a safe and non threatening environment, to overcome their difficulties. The Intermediate Phase begins in Grade 4 and ends in Grade 6. The instructional time in the Intermediate Phase is 27 hours and 30 minutes. There is a shift in the number of subjects from 4 in the Foundation Phase to 6 in the Intermediate Phase. The subjects offered are: Two Languages, Mathematics, Natural Science and Technology, Social Science, and Life Skills.

Languages

At Berea Primary, English is offered as the Home Language and isiZulu or Afrikaans (Grade 7 only) is offered as the First Additional Language. The skills strengthened in both languages are: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Language Structure and usage

Mathematics

Many new mathematical concepts are introduced in Grade 4 with pupils participating in practical activities for deep conceptual understanding. These concepts are strengthened and expanded on in Grades 5 and 6. Some essential skills developed in our Mathematics programme include:

  • Mathematical language
  • Number vocabulary
  • Number concepts
  • Calculation and application skills
  • Listening, communicating
  • Logical thinking and application of concepts
  • Investigating
  • Analysing
  • Interpreting and representing information
  • Posing and solving problems

Natural Science and Technology (NST)

In NST, learners develop the skills to investigate, predict, classify, compare, make deductions, measure, design, construct and evaluate.

Social Science (SS)

SS consists of History and Geography. In SS, learners are given opportunities to speculate, debate, make connections, select, prioritise, and to address real issues that affect our society and our world.

Life Skills

Life Skills deals with the holistic development of the learners. It equips learners with knowledge, skills and values that assist them to achieve their full physical, intellectual, personal, emotional and social potential so that they can become independent and effective in responding to life's challenges as well as to play a responsible role in society. The three interrelated study areas in this subject are: Personal and Social Well-being, Physical Education and Creative Arts.

Grade 5 Musical Instruments

We encourage creativity and thinking outside the box with a variety of hands on projects.

Ushaka Marine Trip

Learning is not always done in a classroom and that is why we organise excursions to extend the scope of learning.

The Teachers

Our family is made up of inspired, experienced and professional educators.

These are our Intermediate phase educators. A writer once said, "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires"

Frequently questions

Get answers to frequently asked questions about the Berea Primary School Foundation Phase.

How and when do we apply for places at your school?

How and when to apply is easy. When the time is right, we make it known on our school website and in local newspapers and media.

Do you admit boys?

We take boys from Grade R to Grade 3, but thereafter we become an all-girls school. This is because we do not have the space for the sporting and other facilities that growing boys require.

When do you begin and end your swimming lessons?

In summer, swimming lessons are incorporated into the curriculum and in winter this is replaced by physical education lessons.

Who is the Head of Department of the Foundation Phase?

The Head of Department for the Foundation Phase is Ms. N. Singh. Refer to our staff page on how to get in touch with her.

Where can I purchase school uniform for my child?

You can get our official school uniform from school uniform suppliers like GEM school wear.

Do you offer Aftercare services?

A Junior and Senior Care Centre facility is available on school days for peace of mind for working parents. It must however be stressed that this facility is an 'extra' and is in no way a part of the school's formal academic programme. The Care Centre is not open during school holidays
